Biography

Alice Dias-Mercier joined King’s College London in 2018, holding an MA in French Translation Studies from George Mason University (USA, 2001) and a PhD from University College London (2015), focusing on French contemporary postmemorial fictions. She was appointed Language Director of the French Department of Languages, Literature, and Culture in 2025, overseeing the coordination and development of undergraduate French language modules. At King’s Language Centre, she has taught a wide range of undergraduate and postgraduate courses, including language-focused classes in the Doctoral Training Partnership (DTP) programme. Alice has received multiple nominations for King’s Education Awards, including Excellent Feedback in 2021 and Teaching Excellence in 2024-2025. She regularly contributes to interdisciplinary initiatives, including guest lectures on gendered language and feminism at the Institute of Psychiatry, Psychology & Neuroscience (IoPPN). Before her time at King’s, she taught French, Francophone literature, language, and translation at University College London, Royal Holloway, and George Mason University. Alongside her academic career, Alice is an associate member of the Chartered Institute of Linguists and holds the IoLET Diploma in Translation, maintaining an active practice as a freelance translator. Her research interests include the intersection of postmemory and creative writing, with a focus on integrating embodied approaches to language pedagogy. Alice is currently engaged in collaborative projects dedicated to creative writing and inclusive teaching practices.
