Dr. Alice Hovorka

Biography

Alice J. Hovorka is the Dean and Professor at the Faculty of Environmental and Urban Change at York University. She holds a PhD in Geography from Clark University and has a strong academic background with degrees from Carleton University and Queen’s University. Her research focuses on human-environment relations through feminist, poststructuralist, and posthumanist perspectives. Hovorka's work emphasizes the intersections of gender and environment, urban geography, and animal geographies, particularly in Southern Africa. She has published extensively on topics such as urbanization and food security, and her research has received significant funding through SSHRC Insight Grants. In addition to her research, Hovorka is actively involved in scholarship on teaching and learning in higher education, with a focus on experiential learning and the challenges of leadership in academic contexts. She has contributed to numerous academic journals and edited volumes, addressing issues such as participatory pedagogy and the role of gender in urban agriculture.
