Dr. Alice Kuzniar

Biography

Alice Kuzniar is a retired professor cross-appointed at the University of Waterloo, where she previously served in the Department of Germanic and Slavic Studies. She spent her formative years in Mississauga and pursued her advanced studies at Princeton University, where she earned her Ph.D. Her research interests span a range of interdisciplinary fields, including German literature, film studies, queer studies, animal studies, and the history of medicine. Kuzniar’s significant publications include 'Birth of Homeopathy: Spirit of Romanticism' and 'Melancholia’s Dog: Reflections on Animal Kinship.' She has held guest professorships at prestigious institutions such as Princeton University and Rutgers University. Kuzniar has received various accolades for her contributions to the field, including fellowships and awards from the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada and the Humboldt Fellowship. Her ongoing research focuses on the intersections between Romantic science and homeopathy, exploring the works of Goethe and Novalis and their relevance to contemporary discussions in literature and medicine. Kuzniar's graduate supervision includes topics such as cinema studies, queer studies, and psychoanalytic approaches in literature and film, reflecting her broad academic influence at the University of Waterloo.
