Biography

Alice Rio is a Professor of Medieval History at King's College London. She was born and raised in Paris and obtained her PhD at King’s College under the supervision of Jinty Nelson. She has been a Junior Research Fellow at New College, Oxford and a College Lecturer at Sidney Sussex College, Cambridge before returning to King's as a lecturer in 2009. Rio's research focuses on the history of early medieval Europe between the 6th and 10th centuries AD, particularly the experiences of women during periods of migration. Her monographs include 'Legal Practice and the Written Word: Frankish Formulae, c. 500-1000' (Cambridge University Press, 2009) and 'Slavery in Rome, c. 500-1100' (Oxford University Press, 2017). She is currently an editor of the journal 'Past & Present' and has served on various editorial boards, including for 'Early Medieval Europe' and advisory editor for the 'Cambridge Medieval Life and Thought' book series. Her research interests encompass the Frankish kingdoms, Merovingians, Carolingians, and the history of women, law, and gender in the context of legal culture and literature during the early Middle Ages.
