Alice Ryan began her social work career 27 years ago, initially working in community mental health and interpersonal violence. She transitioned to healthcare social work, working with health care organizations, and managed Seattle Children’s bereavement program focused on child loss and childhood grief. Her work emphasizes the experience of complicated grief related to the death of a child, and she is particularly interested in increasing access to culturally responsive grief support for communities. Currently an Assistant Teaching Professor at the University of Washington School of Social Work, Alice is also the Co-Director of the Carol LaMare Program, which supports MSW students pursuing careers in Oncology, Palliative Care, Hospice, and bereavement. She values her presence in academia and believes that practice informs theory. Additionally, Alice enjoys cultivating a collaborative learning process within her supervisory relationships in her small private practice, where she provides clinical supervision to social workers. She has been part of the UW School of Social Work community since 2010 and has been recognized with the MSW Student’s Choice Teaching Award multiple times, along with the Seattle Children’s Hospital Odessa Brown Ken Feldman Award for her work in advancing inclusive bereavement support for marginalized families.
