Biography

Alice Staveley teaches a range of courses on British modernism, contemporary British and Canadian fiction, and Virginia Woolf. She won the Dean's Award for Distinguished Teaching in 2016-2017 and currently directs the Honors Program and the Digital Humanities Minor at Stanford University. Prior to her role at Stanford, she taught in the Oxford tutorial system and contributed to the History and Literature concentration at Harvard University from 2001 to 2006. Her research interests encompass modernism, narratology, the history of books and periodicals, women's professions, feminist cultural theory, and digital humanities. Staveley's current book project focuses on Virginia Woolf's life and publishing history. Notable publications include works on Woolf’s short fictional feminist narratology and her European reception. She co-founded and co-directs the Modernist Archives Publishing Project, which is a critical digital archive documenting modernist publishing. Staveley's research in digital humanities recently involved the quantitative analysis of modernist book sales records.
