Professor Alice Vrielink obtained her Bachelor of Science in Chemistry and Masters of Science in Physical Chemistry at the University of Calgary in Canada. She completed her PhD in Physics at the University of London and a Diploma in Crystallography from Imperial College of Science and Technology, London. From 1994 to 2001, she was an Assistant/Associate Professor at McGill University in Canada. Professor Vrielink has continued her research at the University of California, Santa Cruz, and joined the faculty at the University of Western Australia in 2007. Her research focuses on structural biology using protein crystallography and electron microscopy to study the 3D structures of macromolecules. She is particularly interested in enzymes involved in redox catalysis, bacterial membrane biosynthesis, and pathogenesis. Among her current projects is the structural characterization of enzymes that play a role in the endotoxin biosynthesis of Neisseria species, as well as studies on factors involved in mesothelioma pathology and tRNA transport into mitochondria. Professor Vrielink has obtained several grants for her work and collaborates with various researchers to advance her studies in bacterial virulence and complex polysaccharide transport.
