Biography

Alice Zwerling is an infectious disease epidemiologist with a special interest in tuberculosis (TB) and health economics. Her expertise includes cost-effectiveness analyses that guide the thoughtful implementation of new treatment regimens for TB globally, particularly in Canada. Dr. Zwerling received her PhD in Epidemiology from McGill University and went on to specialize in health economic evaluation during her postdoctoral fellowship at Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. Before joining the University of Ottawa, she worked with the KNCV Tuberculosis Foundation in The Hague, providing technical support to national TB programs under the USAID-funded Challenge TB program. Her current research program assesses the cost-effectiveness of novel diagnostics and screening methods for TB and involves both domestic and international collaborations to evaluate the potential impact of scaling preventive TB treatments using economic modeling approaches. Additionally, she collaborates with Nunavut's government and indigenous organizations to tackle key questions for reaching TB elimination in the Canadian Arctic, where TB rates are significantly higher than the general Canadian population.
