Dr. Alicia Elliott

Biography

Alicia Elliott is a Mohawk writer and editor living in Brantford, Ontario. She is known for her far-reaching voice and contributions as a contemporary Indigenous thinker. Her book of essays, 'A Mind Spread Out on the Ground,' became a national bestseller in Canada and was nominated for the Hilary Weston Writers' Trust Prize for Nonfiction, winning the Forest of Reading Evergreen Award. Elliott's debut novel, 'Fell,' has been described as a gripping exploration of Native life, motherhood, and mental health, following a young Mohawk woman as she discovers the horrifying consequences of her picture-perfect life. 'Fell' has received acclaim from publications such as the Globe and Mail and CBC, was named one of the best books of 2023 by the Globe and Mail, and has been longlisted for the Women's Prize for Fiction. Additionally, she is a winner of the 48th annual Amazon Canada Novel Award in 2024. Alicia has written for the Globe and Mail, CBC, and Hazlitt, and has been nominated for National Magazine Awards multiple years, winning Gold in 2017. Her short fiction has been showcased in American Short Stories and Canadian Stories, and she was chosen by Tanya Talaga as the 2018 recipient of the RBC Taylor Emerging Writer Award.
