Biography

Alicia Myles Sheares is an Assistant Professor in Management Science and Engineering at Stanford University, with a courtesy appointment in Sociology. Her research sits at the intersection of race and organizations, focusing specifically on the experiences of underrepresented professionals of color in the United States. Currently, she is working on major projects that explore the experiences of Black tech entrepreneurs in Silicon Valley and Atlanta, as well as investigating company-level factors associated with the success of Black and Latine startups across the U.S. Her research has been published in notable journals including Social Forces, Sociology Race and Ethnicity, Big Data Society, and International Migration Review. Prior to her current position, Professor Sheares was a University of California President’s Postdoctoral Fellow at UCLA. She earned her Ph.D. in Sociology from the University of California, Berkeley, her M.Sc. in Migration Studies from the University of Oxford, and her B.A. from Spelman College.
