Dr. Alin Achim

Biography

Alin Achim is a Professor in the School of Computer Science at the University of Bristol. He holds a Bachelor's and Master's degree from Bucharest and a Ph.D. from Patras. His research interests focus on Computational Imaging, particularly in areas such as statistical learning, signal image processing, and the design of non-linear algorithms based on statistical assumptions. Achim has contributed to the development of numerous algorithms that deliver outstanding performance in digital images analysis, multiresolution algorithms, image denoising, fusion, segmentation, classification, and image super-resolution. His expertise also extends to image processing algorithms utilizing sparse distributions across various imaging modalities. In the context of machine learning and artificial intelligence, he aims to create solutions for inverse problems by leveraging the statistical properties of data while adapting to current trends. His work emphasizes the integration of classical model-based approaches with data-driven techniques, focusing on the theoretical exploration of novel penalty functions necessary for advancing deep learning architectures. Furthermore, Achim's research intersects with Earth Observation, particularly Synthetic Aperture Radar, and medical and biological imaging fields.
