Biography

Alin Albu-Schäffer is a professor at the Technical University of Munich (TUM) specializing in sensor-based robotic systems and intelligent assistance systems. He completed his studies in electrical engineering at the Technical University of Timisoara, Romania, in 1993 and obtained his PhD from TUM in 2002. In 1995, he started his research career at the German Aerospace Center (DLR) where he headed the Department of Mechatronic Components and Systems. Since 2009, he has held a full professorship at TUM, where he is also the director of the Institute of Robotics and Mechatronics at DLR. His research is focused on the design and control of complex robotic systems, particularly those that allow for safe, intuitive interaction between robots and humans in unknown environments. Major applications of his research include robotic assistance in space, industrial manufacturing, and healthcare. Albu-Schäffer has received several prestigious awards and has authored and co-authored numerous key publications in the field of robotics and mechatronics.
