Dr. Alison Bashford

Biography

Alison Bashford is a Scientia Professor and the Director of the Laureate Centre for History & Population at the University of New South Wales. She is an Australian Laureate Fellow of the Australian Research Council and a Fellow of the British Academy. Her research intersects global history and environmental history, focusing on new assessments of the modern world from the eighteenth to the twentieth centuries. Bashford is known for her contributions to the field of population history, examining geopolitical aspects and population policies. She has published numerous works, including 'Intimate History of Evolution: The Story of the Huxley Family', which was among The Economist's top books for 2022 and shortlisted for the Cundill History Prize in 2023. Furthermore, she has served as the Vere Harmsworth Professor of Imperial Naval History at the University of Cambridge and held the Whitlam Fraser Chair in Australian Studies at Harvard University. Bashford's scholarship has garnered recognition, including the Dan David Prize for her contributions to the history of health and medicine.
