Biography

Alison Mountz is a Professor in the Department of Geography & Planning at the University of Toronto Scarborough. Her research explores how individuals cross borders, access asylum, survive detention, resist war, and create safe havens. She advises student research on migration, displacement, borders, and feminist geographies. Mountz's work includes SSHRC-funded research examining shifting geographies of asylum-seeking and the landscapes of policies related to the protection and resettlement of refugees in North America and remote Pacific islands, titled 'Asylum's Afterlives.' She directs a new lab, Haven: Asylum Lab, aimed at preserving and providing access to migration-related data. Mountz has collaborated with filmmaker Lisa Molomot on the documentary 'Safe Haven' (2020), which focuses on generations of war resisters who moved to Canada seeking protection. She has held prestigious positions including Canada Research Chair in Global Migration and the William Lyon Mackenzie King Visiting Professorship in Canadian Studies at Harvard University. Her work has been supported by various major funding bodies, and she is a member of the Royal Society of Canada and a Fellow of the Royal Canadian Geographical Society.
