Professor Alistair Forrest holds a BSc(Hons) in Molecular Biology and a PhD in Bioinformatics. He began his career at the Queensland Institute of Medical Research and completed his Master's in Information Technology at the University of Queensland. He has significantly contributed to both 'wet' and 'dry' lab science, notably in developing microarrays and RNA-sequencing techniques. His work at RIKEN, Japan, after receiving the CJ Martin Fellowship, led him to spearhead the FANTOM5 project, aimed at annotating mammalian genomes with a team of 250 scientists across 20 countries. His research on single-molecule sequencing has advanced our understanding of promoter and enhancer mapping in human and mouse tissues. Professor Forrest's findings have been published in high-impact journals, including Nature and Nature Biotechnology. He currently leads the Systems Biology Genomics laboratory at the Harry Perkins Institute of Medical Research in Perth and has received the Cancer Research Trust Senior Cancer Research Fellowship.
