Alistair received his PhD in Mathematics from Imperial College London, where he worked in the Systems Signals group under the supervision of Nick Jones. His PhD focused on the analysis of single-cell sequencing data, with research interests in mitochondrial genetics and ageing. In addition to this, he developed bioinformatic pipelines and theories regarding the accumulation of somatic mitochondrial mutations over a lifetime. After finishing his PhD, he continued to work as a Research Associate with Professor Jones and jointly with Professor Patrick Chinnery at the Mitochondrial Biology Unit in Cambridge. This position enabled Alistair to further develop statistical models of mitochondrial ageing and to collaborate on the impact of mtDNA mutations on neurodegeneration.
