Alistair Russell received his PhD from the University of Washington in the laboratory of Joseph Mougous, supported by the National Science Foundation, where he studied interbacterial interactions driven by the type VI secretion system. He utilized a combination of genetic, informatic, and biochemical tools during his studies. Following his doctoral research, he worked as a postdoctoral fellow funded by the Damon Runyon Cancer Research Foundation at Merck, collaborating in the laboratory of Jesse Bloom at the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center. His focus was on using novel single-cell methodologies to unravel the events that precipitate the induction of the interferon response to influenza virus. Alistair joined the Molecular Biology faculty at the University of California, San Diego in 2019 and continues to explore the rarity of the interferon response to viral infections, utilizing various advanced techniques including single-cell transcriptomics and fine-grained genetic analyses.
