Biography

Professor Saperstein received her B.A. in Sociology from the University of Washington and her Ph.D. in Sociology-Demography from the University of California-Berkeley. She was awarded the Early Achievement Award by the Population Association of America in 2016 and has worked as a Visiting Scholar at the Russell Sage Foundation and Sciences Po in Paris. Her research primarily focuses on social processes regarding how individuals perceive and classify categorical differences such as race and sex, and the impact these classifications have on social inequality. Current projects investigate methodological approaches to measuring race/ethnicity and sex/gender in surveys and the complexity of identity fluidity and stability. Saperstein's work has been published in prominent journals including the American Journal of Sociology, Annual Review of Sociology, and Demography. She has gained recognition for her work via multiple awards and media engagements including appearances on NPR and The Colbert Report.
