Dr. Aliyah Khan

Biography

Aliyah Khan is an associate professor in the Department of English Language and Literature and the Department of Afroamerican and African Studies at the University of Michigan, where she also directs the Global Islamic Studies Center. Her work focuses on postcolonial Caribbean literature and contemporary literature within Islamic contexts. With a Ph.D. in Literature and Feminist Studies from the University of California, Santa Cruz, Dr. Khan has published extensively, including her book "Far Mecca: Globalizing Muslim Caribbean," which explores themes of literature, history, and music concerning Caribbean Islam. The work has received numerous accolades, highlighting her contributions to the fields of literary and gender studies. Her research interests encompass Caribbean literature, Muslim Islamic literatures, postcolonial ecocriticism, gender, sexuality, as well as comics and graphic novels. Dr. Khan actively engages with media through various platforms, discussing her research on Islamic studies and Caribbean culture. She is also involved in critical editing and advisory roles in several academic journals and publishing projects. Dr. Khan continues to lead research initiatives that analyze the intersections of religion, environment, and community within the Caribbean context and actively participates in academia through teaching and mentorship.
