Biography

Aliz Tóth is an Assistant Professor in Political Science at the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE). Her research focuses on state capacity, bureaucracy, and the politics surrounding natural resources, particularly in India. She is currently working on a book manuscript that investigates the causes of conflict related to land acquisition for infrastructure projects. Her research employs a variety of methods, including original surveys, field experiments, observational data, and in-depth interviews to examine how private sector entities struggle to acquire land for large-scale infrastructure projects. Tóth analyzes the institutions and policies that either mitigate or exacerbate conflicts over natural resources, including land, forests, and mineral resources. Additionally, she explores the role of bureaucrats in facilitating the state's extraction of resources from citizens.
