Biography

Alkistis Skalkidou was born in Athens, Greece. She completed her medical studies at Athens University Medical School and received her PhD in Epidemiology in 2005. After relocating to Sweden for post-doctoral studies and specialist training, she became a certified specialist in Obstetrics and Gynecology in 2010. Currently, she holds the position of Professor at the Department of Women's and Children's Health at Uppsala University and works as a senior consultant at Uppsala University Hospital. She has been awarded the Clinical Associate Professor’s title in 2011 and received various scholarships from the Onassis Foundation and the Marianne Marcus and Wallenberg Foundations. From 2014 to 2020, she was the chairman of the Gynecological Endocrinology Working Group of the Swedish Association of Obstetricians and Gynecologists and is currently the President of the Nordic Marcé Society for Perinatal Mental Health. Her research activities focus on peripartum depression and its effects on offspring, ultrasound pregnancy dating, and internet-based psychological treatment studies of vulvodynia. Skalkidou's work emphasizes the profound impact that peripartum depression has on mothers and their children, highlighting the importance of risk factors and health interventions during the perinatal period.
