Biography

Alla Sheffer is a Professor and Associate Head of Faculty Affairs at the University of British Columbia in the Department of Computer Science. She received her B.Sc. (1991), M.Sc. (1995), and Ph.D. (1999) from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. She was a Postdoctoral Research Associate at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign from 1999 to 2001. She started her academic career as an Assistant Professor at the Technion in Israel (2001-2003) and joined the University of British Columbia as an Assistant Professor in 2003, earning promotions to Associate Professor in 2008 and Professor in 2013. Her research focuses on Virtual and Augmented Reality, as well as Visual Computing, with significant work in geometry processing that addresses algorithmic challenges in digital shape modeling and manipulation. She is particularly interested in discrete geometry representations such as meshes and applies her research in areas including computer graphics and computer-aided engineering. Her work employs tools from computational differential geometry, discrete mathematics, and graph theory to generate, manipulate, and edit discrete geometric models.
