Biography

Professor Bower educated at the University of Cambridge where he served as a University Lecturer in the Department of Engineering before joining Brown University as an Assistant Professor in 1991. He became a member of the Solid Mechanics group in the School of Engineering, focusing on problems in the field of mechanics of materials. During his tenure, he directed the Brown/GM collaborative research laboratory for computational materials research from 2006 to 2022, and he enjoyed teaching talented undergraduates in large introductory engineering courses. Professor Bower retired in 2022 after 35 years of work in the mechanics of materials. His research included the study of failures in contacting surfaces, severe deformation, fatigue in gears, and electromigration-induced failures in microelectronic circuits. He also investigated stresses that develop in thin semiconductor metallic films and the deformation and fracture of electrodes in Li-ion batteries.
