Allan Devol is a professor emeritus who studies the chemistry of low oxygen anoxic marine environments. His fieldwork has taken him to the Arctic, eastern tropical Pacific, and Arabian Sea, as well as the Amazon River. He has participated in 50 research expeditions and served as Chief Scientist on half of these works. Closer to home, he studies the causes of low oxygen levels in Hood Canal, a part of Puget Sound. Devol developed the Oceanic Remote Chemical Analyzer (ORCA), which involves autonomous buoys deployed a decade ago, providing a near-constant stream of water quality data. His contributions to marine biogeochemistry have been recognized through his election as a Fellow of the American Geophysical Union.
