Dr. Allan Mitchell

Biography

Allan Mitchell is a Professor at the University of Victoria specializing in Medieval Literature. His interdisciplinary research spans poetry, rhetoric, philosophy, and science, focusing predominantly on literature from the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries. He authored 'Becoming Human: Matter Medieval Child' and has a forthcoming book titled 'Instrumentality: Technical Objects Orientations Middle Ages'. His published works include influential articles on Chaucer’s astrolabe and John Gower’s geo-astronomical imagery. Mitchell has actively contributed to medieval scholarship through organizing symposia, giving plenary talks at notable conferences such as the London Chaucer Conference, and offering lectures across various prestigious institutions. He has also held a postdoctoral fellowship at the University of Bristol. His works investigate the intersections of human identity and material culture during the Middle Ages, with focus on the complexity of medieval ontologies and ethics within literature.
