Biography

Allen Ball is a distinguished professor in the Department of Art & Design at the University of Alberta. He completed his undergraduate training at the Camberwell School of Arts and Crafts in London, achieving Class Honours in Painting and a commendation in Printmaking. As a Commonwealth Scholar, he graduated with a Master of Visual Arts from the University of Alberta in 1990. Allen is an active visual artist and researcher, recognized through various awards from the Killam Trusts, Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada, and the Canada Council for the Arts. Throughout his career, he has served as a Canadian War Artist and had significant artistic engagements both locally and internationally. His works are included in numerous public and private collections and have been exhibited extensively across Canada, the United Kingdom, and Korea. Allen’s artistic practice often revolves around discrete series that engage with conceptual discursive ideas, particularly regarding subjectivity and representation. He employs diverse methodologies to explore visual cultures and abstract symbolism, continuously looking for collaborative opportunities that emphasize the social aspects of the art-making process.
