Biography

Allen Renear is a professor at the School of Information Sciences and has served as the dean from 2012 to 2019. He teaches courses in data curation, information modeling, and digital publishing, focusing on the development of formal ontologies and their application in information system design and data curation within the humanities. His publications include articles in Communications of the ACM, various science journals, and conference proceedings in library and information science. In addition to his teaching and research, Renear has held several prominent positions such as director of the Scholarly Technology Group at Brown University, president of the Association for Computers in Humanities, and distinguished visiting fellow at the Oxford University Computing Unit. He received his AB from Bowdoin College and his PhD from Brown University, where he also holds an affiliate appointment in the Department of Philosophy.
