Allie Slemon joined the School of Nursing at the University of Victoria in 2023. She began her nursing career as a Registered Nurse in mental health inpatient settings after completing her Master’s and PhD at the University of British Columbia. Her research focuses on remediating inequities in health care and enhancing capacity for equity and social justice within the nursing profession and education. Utilizing community-engaged approaches, her work aims to amplify the voices of people impacted by structural inequities. Additional research interests include mental health care inquiry, stigma and discrimination, and the critical examination of safety risk discourses. Slemon is a co-founder of the AdJust Research Collective. Selected projects include the 2SLGBTQIA+ Liaison Nurse Project, which explores the role of liaison nurses in healthcare contexts and its implications for improving experiences of queer and trans individuals. Another project, the Seclusion Project, conducts community-engaged research aiming to enhance strategies and policies related to seclusion in mental health settings. She is involved in a national survey examining the experiences of discrimination among nursing students and collaborates with the Canadian Association of Schools of Nursing.
