Biography

Toronto-based alto saxophonist Allison Au (pronounced "ow") is a rising force as an improviser, composer, and bandleader. After assembling her quartet a decade ago, she has steadily gained recognition for her welcoming and interactive group sound, inspired by post-bop idioms, Afro-Caribbean rhythms, and pop music forms with R&B cadences. Au's debut album, "The Sky Pale Blue, Grey," earned a Juno nomination in 2013, while her sophomore album, "Forest Grove," seized the Juno award for Best Jazz Album of the Year: Group in 2016. In 2019, her ensemble garnered another Juno nomination for "Best Jazz Album of the Year: Group" with "Wander Wonder." Allison has toured extensively across Canada and was a winner at the 2017 Montreal Jazz Festival’s TD Grand Prix de Jazz, as well as the 2017 Halifax Jazz Festival’s Sting Ray Rising Star Award. She was also a finalist for the Toronto Arts Foundation Emerging Jazz Artist Award in 2017. Furthermore, she was featured on SFJAZZ’s 2018 list of "10 Rising Instrumentalists You Should Know."
