Biography

Allison Christians is the H. Heward Stikeman Chair in Tax Law at McGill University’s Faculty of Law. Her research and teaching focus on domestic and international tax law and policy issues, with an emphasis on the relationship between taxation and economic development, as well as the role of governmental and non-governmental actors in creating tax policy norms. Prior to entering academia, she practiced tax law at Wachtell, Lipton, Rosen & Katz in New York, specializing in taxation associated with domestic and cross-border mergers, acquisitions, spin-offs, and restructurings. She also worked at Debevoise & Plimpton, focusing primarily on private equity funds. Ms. Christians has taught at the University of Wisconsin Law School and Northwestern University School of Law before joining McGill in 2012. She has authored numerous scholarly articles, essays, and columns addressing contemporary national and international tax law policy issues. Her recent research has explored the alignment of taxation with sustainable development goals, evolving international norms of tax cooperation and competition, the tax implications of new technologies, and the evolving concept of rights in taxation. She is the author of the column 'The Big Picture' for Tax Analysts’ Tax Notes International, regularly commenting on developments in international tax law policy. In 2014, she received the John Durnford Prize for Teaching Excellence from the Law Student Association at McGill University, and in 2018, she was awarded the Principal’s Prize for Excellence in Teaching.
