Biography

Allison Crawford advances public mental health with a key focus on improving access and equity in mental health care. Her research encompasses suicide prevention and digital health, partnering to support Indigenous circumpolar health and well-being. In her role with the Psychiatry Outreach program, she provides mental health services throughout Northern Ontario and Nunavut. With 15 years of experience as a psychiatrist in Nunavut, Allison has consulted for the Federal Government on suicide prevention strategies as part of the Inuit Tapiriit Kanatami National Inuit Suicide Prevention Strategy. She collaborates with the Arctic Council's Sustainable Development Working Group on initiatives related to wellness and suicide prevention. Allison holds a PhD in English Literature, integrating arts into health research, and founded the HeART Lab, which focuses on health equity through art and research technology. She also serves as Editor-in-Chief for Ars Medica, a journal dedicated to medicine, arts, and humanities. Currently, she is the Chief Medical Officer for the 9-8-8 Suicide Crisis Helpline, a national suicide prevention service. Additionally, she is a psychiatrist and researcher at the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health and Medical Director of Virtual Mental Health Psychiatry Outreach, and serves as a Professor in the Psychiatry department at the University of Toronto.
