Biography

Allison Hopkins is an Associate Professor in the Department of Anthropology at Texas A&M University specializing in medical ecological anthropology. She focuses on interdisciplinary research connections between globalization and social relationships, particularly as they relate to human health. Her work investigates understanding how people's knowledge of local resources influences behavior and health outcomes. She employs various theoretical and methodological approaches tailored to varying research questions. Currently, her projects include a longitudinal study that examines changes in herbal remedy knowledge over 15 years in a rural Yucatec Maya community, and a cross-cultural survey on local definitions of well-being in Italy and Mexico. She is also involved in a NIH-funded study to capture changes in social networks of quit smokers in the United States, exploring how these networks impact smoking cessation and the dissemination of cessation information. Dr. Hopkins welcomes inquiries from potential graduate students interested in her research areas and provides opportunities for undergraduate students to engage in hands-on research within her Planetary Health Laboratory.
