Biography

Allison Nolting joined Defence R&D Canada in 2006 and she currently holds the position of Head of the Advanced Materials and Energy Section. During her career at DRDC she has led materials science research on a range of topics, such as the development of magnetostrictive alloys; friction stir processing for defect repair and for the fabrication of metal matrix composites; and dynamic material performance. She has conducted complex failure investigations and provided advice on material selection for the Royal Canadian Navy. Prior to pursuing graduate studies, Nolting was the mechanical testing laboratory supervisor at a metallurgical consulting company in Wixom, Michigan (Climax Research Services). Her enthusiasm for mechanical characterisation of materials prompted her to pursue graduate studies, focusing on metal fatigue, at the Royal Military College of Canada. To this day, her favourite research activities involve breaking things slowly.
