Dr. Allyson Hobbs

Biography

Allyson Hobbs is an Associate Professor in the Department of History at Stanford University. She graduated magna cum laude from Harvard University and received her Ph.D. with distinction from the University of Chicago. Hobbs's teaching is focused on American identity, African American history, and African American women's history, particularly in the context of twentieth-century America. She has been the recipient of numerous teaching awards, including the Phi Beta Kappa Teaching Prize and the St. Clair Drake Teaching Award. Her academic work includes the acclaimed book 'Chosen Exile: A History of Racial Passing in American Life', published by Harvard University Press. This work examines the historical phenomenon of racial passing from the late eighteenth century to the present and has garnered significant critical acclaim, including several prestigious awards. Beyond her publications, she has contributed to the public discourse through various media appearances and lectures, including a TEDx talk at Stanford. She actively participates in academic service, mentoring initiatives, and research projects in her field.
