Biography

Almut Fries is a lecturer in the Faculty of Classics at Queen's College, University of Oxford. Her qualifications include the Erstes Staatsexamen from Göttingen, a DPhil from Oxford, and a Habilitation from Göttingen. Her research focuses on archaic classical Greek poetry, investigating artistic expression through language, style, and metre as well as literary history in the broadest sense. She published a book with an edition and commentary on the pseudo-Euripidean 'Rhesus' through De Gruyter in 2014, with a paperback edition released in 2017. Additionally, she has ventured into Greek palaeography and Byzantine scholarship of Greek drama. Currently, she is working on an edition and commentary of Pindar's Pythian Ode, combining literary appreciation with a detailed study of the historical context. Her teaching includes modules on Greek and Latin language, Homer’s 'Iliad', Virgil’s 'Aeneid', and various aspects of Greek and Latin literature.
