Alshakim Nelson received his Ph.D. in Organic Chemistry from the University of California, Los Angeles in 2005. He worked under Sir J. Fraser Stoddart on projects related to carbohydrate-containing polymers and macrocycles. Following his doctoral studies, he became an NIH postdoctoral fellow at the California Institute of Technology, working with Professor Robert Grubbs on olefin metathesis catalysts for the formation of supramolecular ensembles. In 2005, he joined the IBM Almaden Research Center as a Research Staff Member, focusing on the synthesis of nanomaterial building blocks for large area nanomanufacturing and self-assembly. In 2015, Dr. Nelson joined the faculty at the University of Washington, where he leads an interdisciplinary research group dedicated to the synthesis, characterization, and processing of stimuli-responsive materials, particularly applications in medicine, soft robotics, sensors, and sustainability. He has received numerous honors, including recognition as an IBM Master Inventor, ACS PMSE Young Investigator award, and the NSF CAREER award. Dr. Nelson is also involved in teaching various chemistry courses, including Organic Chemistry and Polymer Chemistry.
