Alstan believes that data-driven processes enable designers to create comfortable built environments that support social interaction while minimizing energy use. He is the co-creator of the popular DIVA tool, which calculates daylighting and energy performance for buildings and cities. Alstan actively develops new software tools as part of his research. Before joining the University of Toronto, he taught sustainable design to four graduating classes at the Singapore University of Technology and Design. Additionally, he co-founded Mapdwell, a technology company focused on providing information to homeowners about the renewable energy potential of their rooftops.
