Biography

Alvaro Casas Bedoya is an Associate Director of the Integrated Photonics Sensing Group at the University of Sydney. He leads investigations into applications of chip-based, ultra-fast, ultra-broadband, and energy-efficient information processing devices, as well as smart sensing technologies and light-matter interactions. He received his PhD in Physics from the University of Sydney in 2013, supported by the USydIS scholarship. He also holds a double MSc degree in Photonics with Distinction from the Erasmus Mundus program at St Andrews and Heriot-Watt universities in Scotland, obtained in 2008 and 2009, respectively, and a BSc (Hons) in Physics from Universidad del Valle, Colombia, earned in 2005. His current research focuses on advancing the semiconductor industry in Australia, leveraging fifteen years of experience in the field. Under his leadership, the JSSL group comprises thirty staff members, including postdocs and engineers, and continues to achieve academic excellence within the discipline. He serves on various committees, including the CLEO S&I9 2026: Photonic Integration Symposium and has held leadership roles in numerous educational and professional organizations. His work has resulted in a series of influential publications and awards, highlighting his contributions to the field of integrated photonics.
