Biography

Aly Bailey is an Assistant Professor in Recreation Leisure Studies at the University of Waterloo. With a focus on community and arts-based research, Bailey's work centers around the intersection of various social justice issues, including queer, fat, mad, and disability justice, particularly as they pertain to the study of aging, fitness, and health. Bailey's research critically examines the historical and contemporary constructions of fitness and wellness, challenging colonial, eugenic, and white supremacist ideologies surrounding these concepts. Their ongoing projects, such as 'ReVisioning Fitness,' aim to shift the narrative around fitness and health towards community, relationality, joy, care, and rest, promoting an inclusive understanding of these themes. Currently, Bailey supervises graduate students in related research fields and employs critical feminist theories, embodiment, and mental health studies in their teaching and research. Bailey is dedicated to developing training modules and partnering with public and nonprofit stakeholders to integrate difference-affirming practices into health and wellness programming.
