Dr. Amalia Amaya Navarro

Biography

Amalia Amaya Navarro is a Professor of Law Philosophy at the Edinburgh Law School, having joined the faculty in 2019. She has received the British Academy Global Professorship Award. She earned her Bachelor degrees in Law from the University of Alicante and in Linguistics from the University of Barcelona, followed by an LLM and PhD from the European University Institute and an SJD from Harvard Law School. Before her appointment at Edinburgh, Amaya served as a Research Professor at the Institute of Philosophical Research at the National Autonomous University of Mexico and held visiting positions at the University of Texas at Austin, University College Oxford, and Queen Mary University of London. Her research primarily focuses on the philosophy of law, with particular interests in legal reasoning, epistemology, theories of justice, and international normative theory. Her main research output includes the book 'Tapestry of Reason' published in 2015. Currently, she is working on a project that develops a virtue-based approach to legal reasoning and judicial ethics. Additionally, she is investigating the role of exemplarity in contemporary legal-political culture and its implications for authority on both domestic and global levels, as well as research on the fraternity as a legal-political ideal.
