Amalie Skovmøller is an Associate Professor at the University of Copenhagen. Her research focuses on art, particularly sculptures, spanning from antiquity to the present day. She specializes in ancient polychromy, especially the painting of ancient white marble sculptures, and explores their functions and purposes, especially in the context of portraits from the Roman Republic and Imperial period. Skovmøller is particularly interested in the perception of antique color, multisensory experiences of polychrome sculptures, and the cultural constructions surrounding these works. In addition, she analyses artistic practices, focusing on sculptors' workshop practices and surface textures, while also examining the aesthetics and philosophical concepts related to neoclassicism. Her current research project, entitled "Moving Monuments: Material Lives of Sculptures in the Danish Colonial Era," is developed in collaboration with PI Professor Mathias Danbolt and is supported by the Novo Nordisk Foundation's Investigator Grant. This project investigates the aesthetic afterlife of monumental sculptures within the context of Danish colonial history, particularly focusing on works by the sculptor Johannes Wiedewelt. Skovmøller has contributed to numerous conferences and lectures, discussing various aspects of sculpture and its historical context.
