Biography

Amanda Cheong is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Sociology at the University of British Columbia. She completed her Ph.D. in Sociology & Social Policy at Princeton University in 2019. Her research focuses on how legal status and documentation intersect with people's lives, particularly among stateless, undocumented, and refugee populations in Southeast Asia and North America. Cheong's work is motivated by her family's experiences of statelessness and exclusion in Brunei. She explores themes such as citizenship, politics of civil registration, and the experiences of marginalized communities who struggle to obtain legal recognition. Her book project, 'Vital Omissions,' aims to illuminate the consequences of non-registration and the implications of omitted lives on individuals and communities. Cheong has received numerous awards from organizations such as the American Sociological Association and the United Nations Refugee Agency for her impactful research on immigration and citizenship.
