Biography

Amanda Cole is an Assistant Professor in the Faculty of Modern and Medieval Languages and Linguistics. Her research focuses on sociolinguistics, particularly the varieties of English, language variation and change, language attitudes, and perceptual dialectology. Growing up in a family of East Londoners in Essex, she has developed a fascination with the dialects of Essex and London, as well as how people communicate in Southeast England. Her work examines linguistic variation in relation to social class and gender, and she is a regular contributor to media discussions on linguistic issues. Through her collaborations, she aims to disseminate her research widely and engage with the community. Amanda collaborates with the Accentism Project, which raises awareness about language-based discrimination, and has worked with the English Media Centre to create educational materials that align current research with classroom practices. She is open to inquiries from potential PhD students interested in sociolinguistics.
