Dr. Amanda Pendergast was born in St. John's and grew up in Gander. She moved to Ottawa where she earned her BSc (Hons) in biochemistry from the University of Ottawa in 1995 and her MD from the same institution in 1999. She completed her family medicine residency at the University of British Columbia in 2001. From 2001 to 2005, Dr. Pendergast practiced family medicine with obstetrics in Victoria, BC, and was involved in clinical teaching for residents. In 2005, she returned to St. John's and began working with Student Health Services at Memorial University, where she was appointed Clinical Assistant Professor and commenced teaching medical students and residents. In 2011, she became involved with breastfeeding promotion through the Perinatal Program of Newfoundland and Labrador. By 2012, she joined the family medicine obstetrical group, providing intrapartum inpatient care to pregnant patients and newborns. She is passionate about promoting obstetrical care among medical students and residents. In 2012, she began practicing at the Shea Heights Community Health Centre Medical Clinic, where she teaches medical students, cares for patients, and conducts research. Dr. Pendergast started her Masters in Clinical Science at Western University in 2013. Her research interests include breastfeeding, mental health, addictions, and curriculum development in medicine. Additionally, Dr. Pendergast enjoys staying active, practicing yoga, and caring for her Brittany Spaniels.
