Amer Syed is a mechanical engineer focusing primarily on the area of fracture mechanics. His research interests center around deformation and damage mechanics of complex materials, with a particular emphasis on understanding how micromechanics of fractures inform the macroscopic behavior of materials. Amer has previously worked on the mechanics of deformation and damage in coal, exploring how the mechanical behavior of materials is influenced by adsorption and advection occurring in pore spaces and cracks across multiple length and time scales. His recent work includes developing experimental techniques to acquire information on micromechanics through direct imaging conducted at X-ray and neutron beamlines. Currently, he is focused on enhancing the understanding of micromechanics in the deformation and damage of composite materials, aiming for improved design and damage prediction. Amer is also interested in hearing from potential PhD students who wish to work in the area of micromechanics of composites.
