Amin Zand Vakili received his MD from Tehran University in 2006, and subsequently earned a PhD in Neuroscience from the Albert Einstein College of Medicine in 2014. During his time in the PhD program, he investigated neural activity in cortical areas, focusing on how different brain regions communicate. Following the completion of his PhD, he fulfilled a psychiatry residency at Brown University, which he completed in 2018, being part of an NIH-funded R25 research training track. His residency research concentrated on the use of neuromodulation techniques, such as repetitive Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS), to understand its effects on coordinated neural communication. He has been recognized for his work, receiving the NIMH Outstanding Resident Award and the Chair’s Choice travel award from the Society of Biological Psychiatry. Currently, Dr. Zand Vakili holds a joint appointment at Brown University and the Providence VA Medical Center, where his research employs electrophysiological techniques to delve into the neurobiology of mental illness and how treatments can alter brain circuitry. Specifically, he uses machine learning and computational modeling to analyze electroencephalography data from patients undergoing TMS for depression and PTSD. His research has been supported by a variety of funding sources, and he has been involved in mentoring research awards from NIH and Brown University’s Advance-CTR pilot project.
