Biography

Amir-Hossein Karimi is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of Waterloo, where he also serves as a Faculty Affiliate at the Vector Institute. He holds the Val O'Donovan Chair in Trustworthy AI. Prior to joining Waterloo, he gained extensive industry experience at companies such as Meta, Google Brain, and DeepMind, where he provided AI consulting services to startups and incubators. His work explores how AI systems can recover from and amend poor decisions while evaluating AI safety, factuality, and ethics to build trust. His research intersects areas of causal inference, explainable AI, and program synthesis, and has been featured at leading AI and ML conferences such as NeurIPS, ICML, AAAI, AISTATS, ACM-FAccT, and ACM-AIES. Karimi has received recognition for his contributions to algorithmic recourse, notably through spotlight oral presentations and well-regarded publications.
