Biography

Amit Acharya is the Paul P. Christiano Professor with a courtesy appointment in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Carnegie Mellon University. He is a member of the Mechanics, Materials, Computing (MMC) research group and has a well-established reputation in the field of applied mechanics and theoretical materials science. Acharya received his Ph.D. in Theoretical Applied Mechanics from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in 1994. Following his doctoral studies, he completed a postdoctoral position at the University of Pennsylvania before taking on a senior research engineer position at ABAQUS Standard Development group, which is now known as Simulia under Dassault Systèmes. His work primarily focused on the development of advanced materials modeling strategies, particularly in nonlinear viscoelastic materials. Acharya has also served as a research scientist for the Department of Energy's ASCI-funded Center for Simulation of Advanced Rockets at UIUC before joining Carnegie Mellon University in 2000.
