Biography

Amita Sehgal is the John Herr Musser Professor in the Department of Neuroscience at the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania. She obtained her B.S. from Delhi University in 1980 and her M.S. from Jawaharlal Nehru University in 1982. Sehgal completed her Ph.D. in Cell Biology Genetics at the Graduate School of Medical Sciences, Cornell University, in 1988. Her research focuses on the molecular basis of behavior, particularly mechanisms underlying circadian rhythms. Sehgal's laboratory has made significant contributions to understanding how circadian clocks operate, including isolating the timeless clock gene and elucidating its role in regulating the core endogenous clock. Ongoing research includes investigating the neural circuits driving rest/activity rhythms and the physiological processes influenced by circadian control in both Drosophila and mammals, utilizing Drosophila models to explore sleep regulation and its genetic components. Sehgal's work has been recognized globally, with developments in models to address sleep regulation questions.
