Biography

Amitava Chowdhury is an Associate Professor and Chair of the Department of History at Queen's University. He holds a Ph.D. from Washington State University, an M.A. from Deccan College Research Institute, and a B.A. from Jadavpur University. He has research interests encompassing Global History, British Colonial History, and Diasporas, with a focus on the Atlantic History, archaeology, slavery, and plantation labor during the 19th to 20th centuries. Chowdhury has previously worked in historical archaeology in colonial Mauritius, where he excavated UNESCO World Heritage sites such as Aapravasi Ghat and Le Morne Brabant. He has published extensively on the history and archaeology of fugitive slaves in Mauritius and the Caribbean. As a Fellow at the Weatherhead Initiative on Global History and the Weatherhead Center for International Affairs at Harvard University, he directs the Global History Initiative at Queen's University. His accolades include recognition as a CHOICE Outstanding Academic Title in 2017 for his co-edited work 'Dispersion Belonging: Global Approaches to Diaspora Practice' and the Teaching Excellence Award from the Department of History in 2012.
